Prayer
Leader: Everyone

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

                                                                                     Philippians 4:6-7

Prayer, in public or private, is simply speaking and listening to God.  It is attentiveness to what God is doing and saying in our midst.  Prayer is an essential part of Christian living.  United Methodists believe that it is one of the most important means by which we receive God’s sustaining and sanctifying grace.

Our goal at First Church is to encourage each other to pray constantly, to learn together how to pray, and to know the profound power of prayer in a life of faith.  Our Sunday worship is essentially a common prayer.  It will always include a variety of prayers that enable us to experience the myriad forms and purposes of prayer.  Worshippers are encouraged to submit written prayer requests to be prayed aloud by the pastor in the “Prayers of the People.”

A prayer group meets regularly on Tuesday mornings at 9 am in the pastor’s office.  All are welcome.

You can send us prayer requests here on our website.  You’ll find a “Submit Prayer Request” box at left, and on our homepage.  We will pray your request as part of the “Prayers of the People” at the next worship service, and at our Tuesday morning prayer group.

Our congregation is organized into a “prayer chain,” where all members can be notified immediately of a prayer request via email and telephone.  If you have a need and would like to enlist the prayers of our entire church family, leave a message in the church office.

For private prayer there is a prayer room (pictured below), on the first floor of the church next to the office.  It is a quiet space with comfortable chairs, a kneeler, a beautiful stained-glass window, Bibles, and books.  All are welcome to come, and be refreshed, whenever the church is open.
